CMS Adds 90-Day Reporting Options to MACRA Final Rule – What You Need to Know

MACRA updateMACRA is coming up fast and I’ve received a lot of questions on what practices must do to meet next year’s minimum compliance requirements. CMS announced 2017 will be a transition year and clinicians now have options on how they can report data. CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt, explained the final rule and reporting guidelines in a blog post last month.

The first payment track for providers comes under the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), with reimbursement based on clinical performance, practice improvement, reporting, and use of technology. Providers choosing this track have three reporting timetable options:

  • Full reporting on all measures for either the entire year or a 90-day reporting period
  • 90-day reporting of some (though not all) measures
  • 90-day reporting on a single measure (minimum acceptable option)

Providers who do not meet minimum reporting could have their Medicare payments reduced by 4 percent. Providers reporting for the full year are eligible for increased bonuses as “exceptional performers”.

Everyone is talking about the transition year, but very few are talking about how to meet the 90-day requirements to receive a small incentive payment.
